The biography below was prepared for the dedication of the Hicks and Elaine Shimberg Health Sciences Library on November 12, 1998.

Elaine Fantle Shimberg, born February 26, 1937 in South Dakota, has resided in the Tampa Bay area since 1959, when she joined parents Karl Fantle and Alfreda Edelson after her graduation from Northwestern University. She married Mandell "Hicks" Shimberg in Tampa on October 1, 1961 and began a family which would, by 1971, include Kasey, Scott, Betsy, Andrew, and Michael Shimberg. A professional, award-winning author, Mrs. Shimberg's writing career began with freelance work for a variety of newspapers and magazines. She wrote her first book in 1979, and has since authored and co-authored more than twenty books and booklets, many of which translate medical information about serious health challenges for the lay person. Among fer most subscribed works are "Living with Tourette Syndrome," "Gifts of Times," "Depression: What Families Should Know," and "How to get out of the Hospital Alive." In her writings, Mrs. Shimberg advocates the need for patients to be partners with their physicians, and to take a role in their own healing by  being knowledgeable, by communicating with their doctors, and by being unafraid to ask questions. Among Mrs. Shimberg's civic and community affiliations are the Florida Medical Association, for which she served as the first lay person ever appointed to the Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs; the National Tourette Syndrome Association; the American Medical Writers Association; St. Joseph's Hospital; the United Way; and the University of South Florida.

Mandell "Hinks" Shimberg was born in Syracuse, New York on February 2, 1929, the son of Dr. Mandell Shimberg Sr. and Anna Heiman. He received a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and served with the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. Upon discharge from the military, Mr. Shimberg earned a Master's Degree from Columbia University. Mr. Shimberg came to the Tampa Bay area in 1957, and has been a leader in the real estate and development field ever since. He was one of the original developers of Hillsborough's Town N' Country Park development, and was president of LaMonte-Shimberg Corporation which became the largest developer of single family homes, townhouses, and apartments in the Tampa area during the 1960s and early 1970s. In 1975, Mr Shimberg went into business for himself, and now serves as chairman of the Shimberg Cross Company, a real estate and land development enterprise. Hinks Shimberg presently serves as chairman of the USF "Great Achievements - Great Expectations" capital campaign, is a director of WEDU and the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, and a trustee of the USF Foundation. As a civic and community leader, he is unsurpassed. Among other roles in the history of Tampa, he helped negotiate a lease that would keep the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in town; chaired the Tampa Sports Authority; the Performing Arts Center; the Homebuilders Association; the Tampa Chamber of Commerce; the Committee of 100; and the Downtown Development Authority. His honors and awards include the Tampa Civitan Club's "Citizen of the Year," the Committee of the 100 Hall of Fame award, the Tampa Bay Business Hall of Fame award, and numerous others.
